Caves are vital to archaeologists since the cave formations, like stalagmites and stalactites, are formed by minerals left by drops of water. The average limestone cave only grows 0.1 mm (0.004 in) in one year! These layers teach us about what the earth was like in the past, like the climate and age. When caves flood, they can "freeze" time. In Mexico, ancient caves are now underwater and filled with evidence of the past. There are charcoal fire pits left by the Ancients, Giant Sloth skeletons, ancient mines, and so much more. Click on the book for more information and resources to keep exploring!
